Mixed Indoor Performances and Results

Clydesdale had five teams entered into the WDJCU Indoor Super Eights; the annual indoor cricket competitions that take place in the Hutchesons’ Sports Hall between Christmas and the New Year. And the results and performances resembled the good, the bad and the ugly.

U12s:

The aims for the U12 age group were simple: make sure everyone got the chance to bat and bowl (well, those that wanted to!), learn about how indoor cricket works and perform well in the group stage. And it’s fair to say that the squad performed far better than anyone had dared to dream!

All 3 group games were won in very impressive style. Against East Kilbride a very strong bowling performance resulted in only 21 runs being given away in the 7 overs, with Arman Farid taking 2 wickets for 2 runs in his over and Daniel Cairns and skipper Zain Ashraf both bowling wicket-maidens. Despite losing a couple of wickets, Struan Walker (9*) and Zain (2*) saw the team home. In the game against Ferguslie the bowling again restricted the opposition – with Ferguslie only scoring 38 runs, and Zain bowling another wicket-maiden. Again there was an early wicket but Ihtesham Ul-Haq (12*) and Zain (16*) completed a comfortable victory. And against Kilmarnock , 21 was again the magic number for the bowlers. Grant Bain was the only bowler to take a wicket and there was 1 run out…but bowling and fielding gave nothing away, highlighted by Taha Khan bowling a maiden. In reply it was the now-familiar pattern: early wicket lost, but win safely secured. And so, it was P3, W3, L0 with all players contributing, 2 new wicket-keepers being tried out for the first time (Struan and Fayz Siddiqui) and a place in the Final Group.

First up in the Final Group was Glasgow Accies. The format was slightly different (10 overs per side instead of 7 in the Group Stage) but the early bowling performance was the same – 10 overs bowled, only 50 runs conceded and on this occasion the maiden was bowled by Tarun Koteeswaran…and Zain also picked up 2 wickets for 5 runs from his 2 overs. The early wicket was lost, but eventually 10 from Taha, 12* from Daniel and 7* from Zain completed the win. And, with West of Scotland beating Glasgow Accies in game 2, a winner-take-all final game was set-up.

So it was the U11 league champions (West of Scotland) from the season just finished against a Clydesdale team that finished 4th out of 7th in their league group. It was a team that had won 13 out of 13 matches in 2011 against a team that had won 5 and lost 5…indeed West of Scotland had more league wins that Clydesdale had league points during 2011! But, the guys gave West a real scare, and came much closer than anyone could have imagined to pulling off what-would-have-been a shock victory.

Batting first, there would be no early wicket as Arman and Ihtesham started very well. At one point it was 47/0 off 5 overs, then 58/0 off 7 overs. Eventually Arman was run out for 17; Ihtesham reached the mandatory retirement score of 20 and Zain scored a typically quick-fire 17, before Struan and Daniel took the final score to 82/2 off the 10 overs. (And, the only ever-so-sleight criticism that anyone could have had was that maybe the running could have been a little more aggressive towards the end of the innings…but, given that this was a team that lost a combined 35 wickets in 2 games at one point last year, it was very good to see the players have learned not to throw their wicket away carelessly.)

Chasing 82, West were still firm favourites. And, unfortunately, the early wicket just wouldn’t come as West raced to 43/0 off 3 overs. But then Tarun took 2 wickets in 3 balls. There was a half-chance to run out West’s star batter Robbie McCallum but, although it wasn’t taken, he had to retire very soon afterwards. Then a run out followed. And, another one in the next over. And, suddenly the West running between the wickets became decidedly panicky. Just for a moment, it looked like enough doubt might have been created for Clydesdale to pull off a sensational victory. But, unfortunately, as the outdoor season had proved, this is a very, very talented West team and they had enough to see themselves over the winning line.

Overall: it was 4 games and 3 wins, it saw a far younger and less experienced Clydesdale team push the 2011 U11 WDJCU (outdoor) League winners very hard in fitting end to an excellent tournament and it saw all 9 Clydesdale players perform exceptionally well.

U15s:

The Under 15's were dealt a harsh blow as they were sent crashing out of the 2011 Indoor Competition in the group stages.

The 'A' team were in Group A, versus Glasgow Accies and Ferguslie, and their first game against Accies ended in an agonizing 5 run defeat. Accies won the toss and elected to bat, scoring 82-5 in their allotted 10 overs. The first 5 overs were the undoing of the 15's, as Accies capitalized on fielding errors and found themselves 53-1. But, despite tight overs and a wicket each or Ihtisham Malik and Rohan Dhami, 82 was the final damage. The 15's pulled it back though and started their innings in style, with Adil Ghaffar and Calum Stout taking the game to the opposition. However, a loss of concentration from Adil (who top edged one to point for 19) prompted a collapse (something that seems to have had a nasty habit of plaguing Clydesdale all too often in recent seasons) as 41/0 became 44/5 and then 54/6!   And, although Gregor Anderson putting up a very admirable fight, scoring 24 runs with some excellent stroke play, another run out saw the 15's finish 5 short.

Over to Game 2 vs. Ferguslie, the 15's were sent in to bat, scoring 89-4 in their 10 overs. Much like the Accies innings, Ghaffar and Stout started solidly, but this time Calum was caught and bowled (9) and Adil was unfortunately run out (24). Adam Sadiq and Gregor kept some composure and ticked the score along before Adam was run out (13) and Gregor (10) was caught. Ross Duckett (8*) and Ihtisham (3*) finished the innings off.  Clydesdale in the field were a completely different team to that in Game 1, with a couple of run outs and another very controlled over from Ross Bain (who finished with 3-0-11-0 over the two games) reducing Ferguslie to 21-4 before Gregor, who had taken the first two wickets, returned to finish off the last two – finishing with remarkable figures of 2-0-9-4. Ferguslie 54 all out.

What was then needed in Accies-Ferguslie was for Accies to score less, who were batting first, to score less than 86 and then to lose the game.  The Accies score? 87/6!  That sums the day up quite well…so near but yet so far!

To sum up, a lack of concentration in the first 5 overs of Game 1 was the real undoing of the 15's and, despite putting up a good fight, they left themselves short of the winning line. But the under 15 coach is quietly confident the players will learn from their mistakes...

U15 Group A - Ferguslie v Clydesdale; Glasgow Accies v Clydesdale

U15”B”

The main purpose of the “B” team was to get as many of the full U15 squad a game as possible.  There were some highlights along the way (Imran Ameen’s 18* and some decent efforts in the field) but overall the main aim was to get the players some valuable experience of the indoor game and to highlight how important the basics are…leading into a season where everyone will have to contribute in order for the U15s to have as good a season as they can do.

U15 Group C - East Kilbride v Clydesdale B; Greenock v Clydesdale B; West of Scotland v Clydesdale B

U19s:

Things started well – Glasgow Accies were comfortably beaten, with Accies’ 48/4 being easily chased down.  However, the final game of the group saw Clydesdale play West of Scotland in a winner takes all game.  West only had 7 players instead of 8, the Clydesdale team was at almost full strength and somehow, batting first, Clydesdale could only score 80 – with Sam Page (17), Ilan Selby (21) and Haris Chaudhry (14) being the only players to reach double figures.  Throw in two batters getting “first-ballers” and four run outs and it is easy to see how 80 could have been so much more.  When Bilawal Pirzada bowled the 4th over of the reply as a maiden, West were only 23 off of 4 overs - but crucially they had all 7 wickets in hand.  They were able to chip away at the target score and got there with an over to spare, as the U19s were dumped out in the Group Stage for the first time in 10+ years.
